Interleaved Practice: Why Mixing Domains Beats Studying One at a Time
The research behind interleaving, and why a mixed-domain quiz builds more durable knowledge than a single-topic block.
Spaced repetition answers the question of when to review a fact. It says nothing about what order to study things in. That second question turns out to matter almost as much, and most cert-prep plans get it backward.
The intuitive approach is blocked practice: study one domain until it feels solid, work fifty practice questions on that domain alone, then move to the next one. It feels organized and it feels like progress. The research on how people actually learn to distinguish between similar concepts says otherwise.
The shuffled-textbook experiment
In a 2007 study published in Instructional Science, Doug Rohrer and Kelli Taylor gave college students math problems in one of two orders: blocked, where every problem in a set matched the lesson just taught, or shuffled, where each practice set mixed problems from several earlier lessons. One week later, the students who had practiced in shuffled order scored dramatically higher, even though both groups saw the same problems the same number of times. The only variable was the order.
The gap was not small. Blocked practice creates an illusion of competence: the next problem is always the same type as the one you just solved, so you can often get the right answer by pattern-matching to the immediately preceding example rather than by actually identifying which method the problem calls for. Mix the problem types together and that shortcut disappears. You have to identify the problem before you can solve it, which is the harder and more realistic skill.
Why this matters more for cert exams than for math class
A real certification exam never announces its domain in advance. A scenario question on a mock exam does not come labeled "this is Asset Security" the way a domain-blocked study session does. Part of what the exam is actually testing is whether you can look at an unlabeled scenario and correctly identify which domain, and which concept within it, applies. Blocked practice never trains that skill, because the label is implicit in which stack of questions you happened to be working through.
The Institute of Education Sciences' practice guide on organizing instruction and study reaches the same conclusion from a broader review of the learning-science literature: interleaving worked examples and practice problems from different topics produces better transfer and longer retention than working through one topic at a time, particularly when the topics are similar enough to be confused with each other. Two CISSP domains like Security Architecture and Engineering and Communication and Network Security overlap in exactly this way, and so do CISM's Information Security Risk Management and Information Security Program domains.
What this looks like in practice
- Skip single-domain drilling as your default. A dedicated block on your weakest domain is fine occasionally, but it should not be how most sessions run. Mixed-domain quizzes and mock exams should carry more of your practice time than domain-isolated ones.
- Expect interleaved practice to feel worse in the moment. You will miss more questions in a mixed set than in a blocked one, because you are doing the harder work of identifying the concept, not just applying it. A lower quiz score on a mixed set is not a sign you know less; it is a sign the quiz is measuring something blocked practice never tested.
- Let mock exams do the interleaving for you. A full-length mock pulled across every domain is, by construction, interleaved practice at exam scale. Treat mock exams as a core study tool from early in your prep, not a final check you save for the last week.
Interleaving and spacing are not the same lever
It is easy to conflate the two, since both replace an intuitive study habit with a less comfortable one. Spacing is about timing: review a fact again before you forget it, not immediately after you learn it. Interleaving is about order: mix topics within a session instead of grouping them. They solve different problems and you need both. The bottom line
If a study session feels effortless because every question is obviously about the same topic as the last one, it is probably blocked practice, and it is probably teaching you less than it feels like it is. A harder, more mixed session that forces you to figure out what kind of question you are even looking at is uncomfortable in the moment and far more likely to hold up on exam day.
